13 Swedish companies go green in Southeast Asia

The demand for sustainable energy solution in Southeast Asia is growing, which creates great opportunities for Swedish companies. Most countries in the region are aiming for climate neutrality by 2050 or 2060. The Swedish Energy Agency is working to ensure that Swedish solutions contribute to achieving these goals.

The third batch of the Swedish Energy Agency’s ‘Business Accelerator Programme Southeast Asia’ (BAPSEA) is now underway. BAPSEA is a market introduction programme with a focus on Southeast Asia.
Southeast Asia is experiencing a continuous increase in the need for sustainable and innovative solutions in various areas of energy production, distribution and consumption. This creates great opportunities for Swedish companies looking to expand their business.

Although dependence on coal is still high or very high, most countries in the region are striving to become climate neutral by 2050 or 2060. The Swedish Energy Agency is working to ensure that Swedish solutions can contribute to these climate neutrality goals being achieved or that the timeline is brought forward.

– We experienced the highest number of applications ever for this third batch and we are very happy about this. We have been fine-tuning the programme over the last two years and the high competition for places says something about how attractive the region has become for Swedish business. We also see a strong focus on Asia from the current government and we believe that BAPSEA is a good tool to give our innovative small businesses a push into the market,’ says Helena Bernlad, business developer and project manager for BAPSEA at the Swedish Energy Agency.

The new companies

Björkemar Construction and Consulting (BCC)

BCC offers a system for cultivation technology. The company designs, manufactures and supplies equipment for operations in wood plantations in particular. In Southeast Asia, BCC’s technology can enable the production of a range of species for reforestation, the restoration of flooded areas, the replacement of fossil fuels with biomass, and the promotion of research and development of germplasm cultivation at the local level.

Candela

Candela is developing a new type of electric ship with better performance than fossil-fuelled vessels. The company’s hydrofoil technology combines long range on electricity with high speed – for the first time at sea. The ships fly above the water surface, reducing energy consumption by 80 per cent. Swell and environmental impact are minimised, while passengers enjoy a quieter and more comfortable journey above the waves. In addition, operating costs will be significantly lower than for today’s vessels, favouring the transition to sustainable transport.

Candela’s P-12 ferry is now operating in Stockholm’s local traffic, where it has halved journey times and reduced CO₂ emissions by 97%.

Comsys

Comsys is a Swedish cleantech company operating in several segments through its main product line called Active Dynamic Filters which is a solution for harmonics, reactive power, transients, flicker, imbalance, oscillations and voltage variations. Comsys builds an active filter that removes harmonics and other power quality problems, preventing disturbances in power grids and saving energy. It is a very fast and reliable solution that helps machines perform better, leading to higher productivity. Southeast Asia faces major challenges in this area where economic development is strong.

CorePower Ocean

CorePower Ocean is a technology developer that delivers wave energy systems. CorePower’s wave energy converters have a unique design inspired by the pumping principles of the heart, allowing them to survive the toughest storms. Advanced control technology allows the wave energy converters to oscillate in optimal timing with incoming waves, greatly enhancing power absorption. This allows for high power output relative to the size, weight and cost of the equipment. Southeast Asia has good, but currently untapped, resources for ocean energy. The introduction of CorePower’s technology can accelerate the realisation of these renewable resources.

DECEL

DECEL develops innovative solutions to optimise and improve safety and efficiency in freight yards, with its main product being a braking system specifically designed for freight wagons in marshalling yards. The system operates without an external power supply, reducing the energy footprint and providing precise control and reliable braking for safer marshalling. By eliminating the need for external power and reducing wear and tear on existing infrastructure, Decel’s solutions can minimise both operating costs and maintenance in railway operations in Southeast Asia.

Hulteberg Chemistry and Engineering

Hulteberg is active in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, with a particular focus on hydrogen, renewable raw materials and recycling. The company develops and produces catalysts for these and other specialised applications. Several large renewable hydrogen production projects are underway in Southeast Asia, and the introduction of Hulteberg’s technology can accelerate these.

KRAHN Specialty Fluids

KRAHN Specialty Fluids is a leading manufacturer of refrigerants for cooling systems and antifreeze for fire protection. The refrigeration product, CRANE Temper, is an innovative and high-performance refrigerant that, with its exceptionally low viscosity and high thermal conductivity, reduces energy consumption and enables a more compact and cost-effective design. The product is biodegradable, food grade and has advanced corrosion protection. Southeast Asia is one of the fastest growing markets for refrigeration systems and the introduction of KRAHN’s technology can contribute to a more sustainable value chain.

Swedish Neutral

Swedish Neutral’s ‘Ground fault neutraliser’ is a comprehensive solution to reduce the risks of ground faults, which account for up to 99% of damage in electrical distribution networks. Ground faults can cause power outages, equipment damage, fires and even human deaths. In Southeast Asia, Swedish Neutral’s technology can play a crucial role in creating sustainable distribution networks. By integrating advanced earth fault protection systems, the region can significantly improve grid reliability and increase asset security. These improvements help build a resilient and efficient energy infrastructure, which is in line with Southeast Asia’s pursuit of sustainable development.

Waltero

Waltero makes any meter smart in 5 minutes by adding a battery-powered W-Sensor to existing electricity, gas or water meters so that the operator can monitor the readings in real time. By keeping the existing meter, there is no waste and by then making them smart, consumption can be optimised; leaks can be detected, and customer behaviours can be taught. In Southeast Asia, Waltero’s technology can help lower barriers to cost, installation, and accelerate operational efficiency.

Wayout

Wayout provides systems for the local production of drinking water. The drinking water is always locally produced, 100% plastic-free and scientifically perfected with a naturally balanced pH and mineral composition. The systems eliminate unnecessary logistics, significantly reduce costs and cut the environmental impact by up to 50% in CO₂ emissions.

Introducing Wayout’s technology to Southeast Asia could reduce the need for long-distance transport of water and reduce the use of single-use plastics.

About the Business Accelerator Program Southeast Asia (BAPSEA)

Starting in 2023, the Swedish Energy Agency decided to expand its successful Business Accelerator Program Indonesia (BAPI) to more markets in the region by launching the Business Accelerator Program Southeast Asia (BAPSEA). The programme includes countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The programme is for companies that are ready to take on a dynamic market and want to join us on the journey towards realising a sustainable energy system in Southeast Asia.

The 18-month programme includes expert advice from Business Sweden and delegation trips where companies have the opportunity to introduce themselves and network with decision-makers and representatives from the local business community.

Participation in the programme is free of charge for companies. All that is required is a strong energy and sustainability profile as well as ambition and strong resources to take on a product launch in Southeast Asia.
